Die Ausgabe 2026 versammelt Werke von saudi-arabischen und internationalen Künstlern verschiedener Generationen, die auf AlUlas einzigartige kulturelle Landschaften reagieren. Das kuratorische Thema „Space Without Measure“ ist inspiriert von der poetischen Vision des libanesisch-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Kahlil Gibran. Seine Gedanken zu Möglichkeit, Wahrnehmung und der grenzenlosen Natur des menschlichen Geistes verbinden sich mit AlUlas scheinbar unendlichen Horizonten – einem Terrain aus Geschichte, Erinnerung und Imagination.

Innerhalb dieses Rahmens werden die temporären Installationen zu Wegmarken der Reflexion und der Verbindung. Von immersiven Umweltvisionen bis zu neu gedachten Blickachsen auf Landschaft und Geschichte laden die Werke dazu ein, AlUla auf subtile und zugleich transformative Weise zu erfahren.

Seit der ersten Ausgabe 2020 hat Desert X AlUla ein bedeutendes Erbe ortsspezifischer Kunst geschaffen und bislang 50 Projekte realisiert. Mehrere Werke aus den Editionen 2020 und 2022, unter anderem von Lita Albuquerque, Manal AlDowayan, Dana Awartani, Alicja Kwade und Sultan Bin Fahad, wurden von der Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) erworben und sind heute Teil der Arts AlUla Public Art Collection, die im gesamten Gebiet von AlUla sichtbar ist.

Über die Jahre hat sich Desert X AlUla zu einer einflussreichen Plattform für saudi-arabische und internationale Künstler entwickelt. Die teilnehmenden Künstler der Ausgabe 2026 werden in den kommenden Wochen bekannt gegeben. Zugleich ebnete Desert X AlUla den Weg für Wadi AlFann, ein 65 Quadratkilometer großes Open-Air-Museum für monumentale, permanente Land Art, dessen Eröffnung ab 2028 geplant ist.

Now in its fourth year, Desert X AlUla has realised more than 50 commissions in Saudi Arabia, some of which still stand today in the landscapes of AlUla, as much a part of the landscape as the environment on which they inhabit. For us at Arts AlUla, this partnership serves as a glimpse of what is to come, a prelude to Wadi AlFann which means Valley of the Arts, our forthcoming global cultural destination for land art. It will be our generation’s legacy, communicating the story of this landscape to future civilisations, and connecting creativity, community and the desert’s timeless story on the international stage.“
